NOTES: AIRVIEW OF BUS MAROONED FOR SEVERAL DAYS IN SNOWDRIFTS NEAR LINCOLNSHIRE FOLLOWING ENGLAND'S WORST BLIZZARD IN FIFTY YEARS. RESCUE PARTY OF FIFTY MEN DUG A PATH TO THE BUS. THIS IS THE INFORMATION FROM THE BACK OF THE PHOTO BUT IT SEEMS ODD. PRESUMABLY, THERE WERE PEOPLE ON THE BUS IN WHICH CASE, "SEVERAL DAYS" LATER, WOULDN'T THEY BE DEAD? LIKE FROZEN TO DEATH IF NOT STARVED OR DIED OF THIRST? AND IF IT WAS SUCH A BIG DEAL THAT IT REQUIRED FIFTY MEN TO PLOW IT OUT, WHY DID THEY WAIT SEVERAL DAYS? ANOTHER ONE OF THOSE BRITISH SNOW BUS MYSTERIES.

NOTES: THREE YEARS AFTER THIS PHOTO WAS TAKEN,  CARDINAL PACELLI BECAME POPE PIUS XII, AND BEGAN A CONTROVERSIAL TWENTY YEAR REIGN. IT'S INTERESTING THAT THERE WAS SO MUCH ATTENTION BEING PAID TO PACELLI AT A TIME WHEN HE WAS ONLY THE VATICAN SECRETARY OF STATE ARRIVING IN NEW YORK ON THE CONTE DI SAVOIA, AN OCEAN LINER. EVERYONE ELSE, EVEN THEN BISHOP SPELLMAN, WAS ELIMINATED FROM THE PHOTO.  PIUS PRESIDED OVER THE CHURCH DURING WORLD WAR II AND FAMOUSLY DID NOTHING TO AID THE JEWS.

CONDITION: DINGS, SCRATCHES, SURFACE IMPERFECTIONS, PLUS FOUR PARALLEL TEARS AT THE BOTTOM, RUNNING APPROXIMATELY 3/4 OF AN INCH INTO THE IMAGE.

NOTES: FLAGPOLE SITTING WAS A MAJOR AMERICAN FAD IN THE MID TO LATE 'TWENTIES. IT HAD ITS ROOTS IN AN ANCIENT DISCIPLINE CALLED STYLITISM, OR COLUMN SITTING, AND WHICH WAS A RELIGIOUS EXPERIENCE. FLAGPOLE SITTING NOT SO MUCH. THE SERIOUS POLE SITTERS HAD LOUNGE CHAIRS OR EVEN LITTLE HOUSES BUILT AT THE TOP OF THE POLE. THIS KID DOES NOT LOOK SET UP FOR SEVERAL DAYS OR EVEN SEVERAL HOURS OF SITTING, THOUGH IT'S NIGHT, SO HE MUST HAVE BEEN THERE FOR SOME AMOUNT OF TIME. WHAT WE CAN SEE IS THAT HE LOOKS EMACIATED, AND HIS SHOES AND CLOTHES ARE FALLING APART. ONE WOULD GUESS THAT HE'S VERY POOR AND IS  DOING THIS FAIRLY DANGEROUS STUNT TO MAKE SOME MONEY.

NOTES:  DANISH PARACHUTE JUMPER JOHN TRANUM AS HE DIVED FROM THE WING OF A PLANE OVER BROOKLANDS, ENGLAND, DURING A FLYING SHOW. TRANUM WAS A MASTER AT THE “DELAYED” DROP, MEANING HE WOULD FREE FALL FOR A MEASURED PERIOD BEFORE PULLING THE RIPCORD ON THE PARACHUTE. IN THIS CASE, THE FALL WAS 500 FEET. FIVE YEARS LATER, HE WOULD DIE ATTEMPTING TO FREE FALL 25,000 FEET, THOUGH HE FELL UNCONSCIOUS BEFORE HE JUMPED FROM THE PLANE AND COULD NOT BE SAVED IN PART BECAUSE IT TOOK AN HOUR FOR THE PLANE TO LAND FROM 30,000 FEET.  NOTE THE EXTENSIVE OVERPAINTING DONE TO HIGHLIGHT BOTH THE PLANE AND THE JUMPER.

CONDITION DINGS, SCRATCHES, SURFACE IMPERFECTIONS

NOTES: THERE'S A VERY INTERESTING STORY BEHIND THIS PHOTO WHICH WAS TAKEN IN 1927 AS IT WAS FLYING OVER CHICAGO. IT WAS PRINTED IN 1957, AND AGAIN IN 1966 BECAUSE OF THE BIPLANE'S PROVENANCE. THE 80A WAS THE FIRST PASSENGER AIRLINER THAT BOEING PRODUCED. IT CARRIED 18 PASSENGERS IN RARE LUXURY, WITH LEATHER SEATS, AND FOR THE FIRST TIME EVER, STEWARDESSES. IT WAS PART OF A FLEET OF PLANES OWNED AND RUN BY BOEING AIR TRANSPORT WHICH WOULD EVENTUALLY BECOME UNITED AIRLINES. ONLY ONE OF THESE PLANES STILL EXISTS AND IT'S UNLIKELY THAT IT'S THE ONE IN THIS PHOTO. IT'S IN A MUSEUM IN SEATTLE (HOME OF BOEING). THE OVERPAINTING ON THE PLANE ITSELF IS OBVIOUS. LESS SO IS THE PAINTING ON THE SIDES OF THE BUILDINGS IN THE LEFT BACKGROUND.

GLOSSY FIBER SILVER GELATIN WITH EDITORIAL ANNOTATIONS AND PAINT.

CONDITION: DINGS, SCRATCHES AND SURFACE IMPERFECTIONS

NOTES: THIS REMARKABLE 105 YEAR OLD PRINT IS IN GOOD CONDITION FOR ITS AGE AND CIRCUMSTANCES, AND BRINGS WITH IT AN INTRIGUING MYSTERY. AN UNDATED GLASS NEGATIVE OF THIS PRINT IS IN THE LIBRARY OF CONGRESS. THE PRINT ITSELF HOWEVER IS DATED (PER THE DATE STAMP ON THE VERSO) AUGUST 15, 1912. SCRATCHED ON THE NEGATIVE AND SHOWING FAINTLY ON THE PRINT ARE THE WORDS  “MRS WILSON WOODROW”, AN ODD INVERSION OF THE NAME BUT TYPICAL FOR HOW WOMEN WERE  IDENTIFIED AT THAT TIME. HOWEVER, THESE ANNOTATIONS WERE MADE BY DIFFERENT PEOPLE AND APPEAR IN DIFFERENT PLACES, AND MOST IMPORTANT.Y, THE WOMAN IN THE PHOTO IS CLEARLY EDITH BOLLING GALT WHO WAS NOT MARRIED TO WOODROW WILSON IN 1912. SHE MARRIED HIM IN 1915 AFTER HIS FIRST WIFE DIED AND SHE WENT ON TO BECOME VERY INVOLVED IN THE WORK OF THE PRESIDENCY. IN 1919, WILSON SUFFERED A MASSIVE STROKE AND WAS INCAPACITATED. IN HER EFFORTS TO PROTECT WHAT REMAINED OF HIS HEALTH, MRS. WILSON BASICALLY TOOK OVER RUNNING THE EXECUTIVE BRANCH. THIS WAS KEPT ENTIRELY SECRET FROM THE PUBLIC, CONGRESS AND EVEN THE STAFF OF THE WHITE HOUSE. FOR A YEAR AND FIVE MONTHS, SHE WAS EFFECTIVELY THE PRESIDENT. QUESTIONS REMAIN ABOUT THE SEQUENCE OF EVENTS PERTAINING TO THE PHOTO, BUT CERTAIN FACTS ARE CLEAR: THIS IS A PORTRAIT OF A WOMAN WHOSE ACHIEVEMENTS WERE A CLOSELY HELD SECRET, AND THE CROPMARKS AND ANNOTATIONS SUFFICIENTLY ALTER THE ORIGINAL PRINT THAT IT BECOMES AN ARTWORK ON ITS OWN.

AFTER TWENTY YEARS AS PASTOR AT THE GRAND AVENUE CHURCH, THE REV CHARLES HALLOCK BEALE IS STEPPING DOWN, TO BE REPLACED BY HIS SON, THE REV ARTHUR STANLEY BEALE. THIS WAS A RADICAL MOVE IN WISCONSIN IN 1929, CERTAINLY. THE PHOTO SEEN IN THE BOOK IS THE SAME AS OURS, EXCEPT THAT FOR PUBLICATION IN A NEWSPAPER, IT WAS DETERMINED, APPARENTLY, THAT THE GOOD REVEREND NEEDED MORE HAIR AND LESS UNDER-EYE DARKNESS.

NOTES: THERE WAS A LOT GOING ON IN THE ORIGINAL FULL PHOTOGRAPH. WE HAD MAJOR SMITH, THE POST MARKSMANSHIP OFFICER, HOLDING UP A COMPOSITE TARGET WHILE MAJOR GENERAL PRATHER, COMMANDING GENERAL OF FORT HOLABIRD CONGRATULATES CAPTAIN GAYLORD NESS ON HIS REVOLVER SHOOTING SCORES WHICH ARE VERY IMPRESSIVE ANY WAY YOU LOOK AT IT. 299 OUT OF 300. THAT'S MIGHTY FINE SHOOTING. HOWEVER, BY THE TIME OF THE THIRD PUBLICATION OF THIS PRINT, IN 1963, EVERYTHING'S GONE EXCEPT NESS. IT'S DIFFICULT TO DECIPHER WHAT WAS GOING ON THE SECOND TIME THIS IMAGE WAS USED, 1961. BOTH NESS AND SMITH ARE HIGHLIGHTED WITH OVERPAINTING AND PRATHER IS SIMPLY CROSSED OUT, AS IS SMITH. SHOWING NESS AND SMITH IN ISOLATION WOULD MAKE NO SENSE BUT SHOWING THE TWO OF THEM WITHOUT PRATHER WOULDN'T EITHER. QUITE THE MYSTERY. WE HOPE CAPTAIN NESS GOT MORE FOR HIS EXCELLENT SHOOTING THAN JUST A COPY OF THIS PRINT FOR HIS WALL.

NOTES: ONE ALMOST DOESN’T KNOW WHERE TO START ON THIS ONE. ALFONSO, PRINCE OF ASTURIAS, MET EDELMIRA, LATER TO BECOME COUNTESS OF COVADONGA, AT A SANATORIUM WHERE HE WAS BEING TREATED FOR HEMOPHILIA. THEY FELL IN LOVE AND PLANNED TO MARRY BUT THE SPANISH ROYAL FAMILY WAS OPPOSED, PERHAPS BECAUSE SHE WAS THE DAUGHTER OF A CUBAN MERCHANT. IN ANY CASE, ALFONSO’S FATHER, ALFONSO XIII, WHO WAS HIMSELF ALREADY IN EXILE IN PARIS, TOOK AWAY HIS FIVE CARS AND CUT HIS ALLOWANCE AND, OH YES, SAID HE’D HAVE TO ADBICATE. WHICH HE DID. NO ONE CAME TO THE WEDDING,  WHICH WAS IN OUCHY, SWITZERLAND IN  1933, THE YEAR OF THE PHOTO.  THE NAME OF THE TOWN WAS ODDLY PRESCIENT, SINCE THEIR RELATIONSHIP WAS BUMPY. SHE WAS JEALOUS AND HE WAS HEMOPHILIAC, AND AFTER SEVERAL SHORT SEPARATIONS, THEY FINALLY DIVORCED IN 1937, A LONG FOUR YEARS. HE REMARRIED A MONTH LATER AND THEN DIVORCED FOUR MONTHS AFTER THAT AND THEN DIED THE FOLLOWING YEAR IN A CAR ACCIDENT. AFTER ALFONSO’S DEATH, THE ROYAL FAMILY DECIDED THEY LIKED HER AFTER ALL AND TREATED HER AS A ROYAL WIDOW. SHE EVEN GOT SOME JEWELRY WHEN HIS MOTHER THE QUEEN DIED. THOUGH SHE LIVED ANOTHER SIXTY YEARS, SHE HERSELF NEVER REMARRIED. SHE RETURNED TO HAVANA BUT WITH THE REVOLUTION, LIKE SO MANY OTHERS, SHE MOVED TO FLORIDA, SPECIFICALLY TO CORAL GABLES, WITH THE OTHER ROYAL WIDOWS.

NOTES: MALRAUX WAS A NOVELIST, ART HISTORIAN AND DE GAULLE’S CULTURE MINISTER, AND APPARENTLY A FANTACIST. HE FABRIATED HIS ROLE IN THE RESISTANCE, WHICH WON HIM UNDESERVED GLORY AND MADE UP STORIES OF MEETINGS WITH STALIN AND MAO, AND MUCH MORE. IT IS THEREFORE SOMEWHAT IRONIC THAT ONE OF THE LONG REMEMBERED MALRAUX QUOTES IS: “MAN IS NOT WHAT HE THINKS HE IS, HE IS WHAT HE HIDES.”

WHEN THIS PHOTOGRAPH RAN IN THE NEWSPAPER, ITS CAPTION READ: “HE WASHED PARIS’ FACE.“ A REFERENCE TO THE PROGRAM HE BEGAN OF CLEANING THE LONG BLACKENED FACADES OF NOTABLE FRENCH BUILDINGS.

Price $1450

Date 1936 Date stamp and annotations on verso

Print size 10" x 8"

Framed in white metal 20" x 16"

Glossy fiber silver gelatin with editorial annotations and significant overpainting

Condition: Dings, scratches and surface imperfections

Notes: This photo, taken four days after the beginning of the war, shows the rebel forces marching from Burgos (where four months later Franco would set up the rebel government) to Madrid. The rebels were the Nationalists and were a fascist movement. Note the Nazi salute by the man on the left. This photograph was "rushed to Bordeaux, France, and telephotoed to London, and then radioed to New York", and it might have been that series of transferring events degraded the print to the point that all of the overpainting was necessary. In any case, as you can see, the four primary figures have been nearly entirely painted in. Only the background remains as shot. Quick rest of the history: The Spanish government, known as the Republicans, were leftists and were supported by the USSR and the USA. The rebels were supported by Germany and Italy. Franco eventually came to power when the civil war ended in 1939. He was a dictator but did not actually join the Axis during the war.

Note: This photo, taken four days after the beginning of the war, shows the forces loyal to the Republican government manning the barricades against the fascist rebel fighters. In any case, as you can see, the primary figures have been heavily painted in. Only the background remains as shot.
